Tune in for a clear, straightforward breakdown that separates fact from fiction when it comes to joint sounds and chiropractic care.

Hey there, and welcome back. I’m Doctor John Tysdal, and you’re listening to the Southern Wellness Chiropractic podcast, coming to you from right here in Magnolia, Texas. Today we’re talking about something I get asked about all the time. And I mean, all the time. We’re talking about that pop, that crack, that sound that happens when you get adjusted or when you crack your own knuckles. What is that sound? Is it bad for you? Does it mean something’s broken? Let’s clear this up once and for all.

Now, here’s the thing. That sound makes a lot of people nervous. I totally understand that. You come in for your first adjustment, you hear a pop, and your brain immediately goes to… did something just break? Did that hurt me? But here’s what’s actually happening, and once you understand it, I think it’ll put your mind at ease.

Your joints are surrounded by a fluid called synovial fluid. Think of it like a natural lubricant inside your joints. That fluid contains dissolved gases, things like oxygen and carbon dioxide. When a joint is moved quickly through its range of motion, the pressure inside that joint changes. And when that pressure changes fast enough, those dissolved gases can release, forming a tiny bubble. That bubble releases energy, and that energy makes a sound. That’s it. That’s the pop. It’s called cavitation, and it is completely harmless.

Here’s what’s interesting. Research has shown that that pop, that sound itself, is not what creates the benefit of an adjustment. The benefit comes from the movement. When a chiropractor performs an adjustment, we’re restoring motion to a joint that has become restricted. We’re stimulating the surrounding muscles and nerves. We’re helping your body reset its normal movement patterns. The sound is just a side effect. A very satisfying side effect for a lot of people, but a side effect nonetheless.

Now, you know what I hear a lot? People say, oh, I just crack my own back all the time, so I don’t need to come in. And I appreciate the DIY spirit, I really do. But here’s the difference. When you twist yourself or pop your own knuckles, you’re releasing tension somewhat randomly across multiple joints. When a chiropractor adjusts you, we are targeting a very specific joint that is not moving the way it should. We’ve assessed your spine, we’ve identified where the restriction is, and we’re addressing that exact spot with a precise, controlled movement. It’s like the difference between randomly pressing keys on a piano versus playing a song. Same instrument, very different result.

So what can you do starting today? First, if you feel the urge to constantly crack your neck or back, pay attention to that. It usually means there’s tension or restriction in your spine that needs some attention. Second, try not to force your joints. Let them move naturally. Gentle stretching, staying hydrated, and moving regularly throughout the day all support healthy joints. And if you’re sitting at a desk most of the day, get up every thirty to forty-five minutes and just move around a little. Your joints will thank you.

Now, if you’ve been dealing with chronic stiffness, if certain spots in your spine feel like they constantly need to be cracked, or if you’re having pain that won’t go away, that is your body telling you something. That’s a great reason to come in and get evaluated. We can take a look at what’s going on and put together a plan that actually addresses the root of the problem.

Look, chiropractic care is not about the pop. It’s about restoring function, reducing pain, and helping you feel like yourself again. The sound is just a bonus.
