Whether you’ve just received this diagnosis or have been living with disc-related pain, this episode offers straightforward, reassuring guidance from a chiropractic perspective.
Hey there, and welcome back. I’m Doctor John Tysdal, and you’re listening to the Southern Wellness Chiropractic podcast, coming to you from right here in Magnolia, Texas. Today we are talking about something that causes a whole lot of worry and confusion for people. Disc bulges and herniations. And I want to start by saying this… if you’ve been told you have one of these, take a breath. Because what you’ve probably been imagining is likely a lot scarier than what’s actually going on.
So let’s clear the air. First, what even is a disc? Think of the discs in your spine like little shock absorbers sitting between each of your vertebrae. They have a tough outer ring and a softer gel-like center. Their job is to cushion your spine, give it flexibility, and help you move through your day without everything grinding together. Pretty important stuff.
Now, a disc bulge happens when that outer ring weakens a bit and the disc pushes outward, kind of like a burger patty that’s been squeezed a little too hard. A herniation is when that outer ring actually cracks or tears, and some of that inner gel material pushes through. Both of these can irritate nearby nerves, and that’s usually where the pain comes from.
Here’s what’s interesting though… and this is the part I really want you to hear. Research in the field of spinal imaging has shown us that a significant number of people walking around right now have disc bulges or herniations and feel absolutely nothing. No pain, no symptoms, nothing. So having one of these findings on an imaging scan does not automatically mean you’re broken. It does not mean you need surgery. And it certainly does not mean your life has to stop.
Now, here’s the thing. Context matters enormously. The question isn’t just what shows up on a scan. The question is, what’s actually happening in your body? Are you having pain? Is there weakness, numbness, or tingling running down an arm or a leg? How long has it been going on? Those are the details that help us figure out what’s really driving your symptoms and what kind of care makes sense for you.
So what can you do right now? A few things. First, keep moving. I know that sounds counterintuitive when you’re hurting, but gentle movement is actually good for your discs. Staying completely still for days on end can actually slow your recovery. Walking, gentle stretching, changing positions throughout the day. These things matter.
Second, pay attention to posture. A lot of disc issues are aggravated by sustained positions, like sitting hunched over a screen for hours. Try to take breaks, stand up, move around every thirty to forty-five minutes.
Third, don’t panic over the language. Words like bulge, herniation, or degeneration sound really alarming. But they’re actually pretty common findings, especially as we get older. They describe what’s there, not necessarily what’s causing your problem.
Now, when should you come see us? If you’re dealing with pain that’s been hanging around for more than a week or two, if you have shooting pain, numbness, or tingling going down your arm or your leg, if something feels off and you just want to know what’s going on. those are great reasons to come in and get evaluated. We can take a thorough look at what you’re dealing with and put together a plan that makes sense for your situation.
Chiropractic care can be a really effective, conservative option for disc-related issues. We work to restore proper movement to the spine, reduce pressure on irritated nerves, and help your body do what it’s designed to do, which is heal.
Alright, I hope this gave you some peace of mind today. Disc bulges and herniations are not a life sentence. Most people do really well with the right guidance and conservative care. You’ve got options.

My first time to a Chiropractor and so glad I chose Southern Wellness Chiropractor Clinic. Dr Tysdal is very kind, patient, and knowledgeable. I feel confident that some of the issues I’ve had for quite some time will be resolved under his care.
Dr. Tysdal is the man! I went to his clinic after suffering a lower back pain. After he took an x-ray, it turns out that the vertebrae my lower back are closing in together. So, he put me in a three-month plan, where I will be in decompression sessions for the first month along with adjustments. And then, only adjustments for the last two months. He also provided advise on my form when doing squats in the gym. Fast forward to the end of the third month, I am pain free! I highly recommend Dr. Tysdal. He will work with you and set up a plan. The only thing that he expects from you is to commit 100% to the plan that he provides. If you commit, you will be pain free in no time!
Great service make me feel so better after one session the doctor was so friendly and good with communication

I had two appointments on the same week days and was late to both because of work. I had contacted them to see if they could reschedule, and they were still able to take me in. They also communicate properly and fast!
I had a wonderful experience at my first visit. Everyone was attentive, and took the time to address my back concerns. I left feeling much better after my appointment and was very pleased with the care I received. I’ll definitely be returning and would highly recommend them! Thank you!
