Hey there, this is Dr. John Tysdal

from Southern Wellness Chiropractic here in Magnolia, Texas. Thanks for tuning in today.

Let me ask you something. How many hours a day do you think you spend looking down at your phone or hunched over a computer? If you’re like most folks, it’s probably way more than you’d like to admit. And your neck? Well, it’s paying the price.

Today we’re talking about something I see in my practice literally every single day. Tech neck. It’s become an epidemic, and chances are you’re dealing with it right now, even if you don’t realize it yet.

So what exactly is tech neck? It’s pretty simple, actually. Every time you tilt your head forward to look at your phone or laptop, you’re putting a massive amount of extra stress on your neck. Here’s the thing. Your head weighs about ten to twelve pounds when it’s balanced properly on your spine. But for every inch you tilt it forward, you’re adding weight. At a fifteen degree angle, it’s like twenty seven pounds. At sixty degrees, which is typical texting posture, we’re talking sixty pounds of force on your neck.

Sixty pounds. That’s like carrying an eight year old kid on your shoulders all day long.

Your body wasn’t designed for that. And over time, all that forward head posture starts causing real problems. Tight muscles in the back of your neck and shoulders. Headaches that won’t quit. That burning sensation between your shoulder blades. Stiffness that makes it hard to check your blind spot when you’re driving. Sound familiar?

Now, you might be thinking this is just part of modern life, right? Everyone’s on their phones. Everyone’s working from home. But here’s what’s interesting. Your body has an incredible ability to adapt when you give it the right conditions. Tech neck doesn’t have to be permanent.

Let me break this down for you. First thing you need to understand is awareness. Most people have no idea how much they’re doing this throughout the day. So start paying attention. Notice when you’re craning your neck forward. Catch yourself in the act.

Then, here’s a simple fix you can start using right now. Bring your devices up to eye level instead of dropping your head down to them. Hold your phone higher. Raise your computer monitor so the top of the screen is at eye level. It feels a little weird at first, I’ll be honest. But it makes a huge difference.

Next up, you’ve got to move. Sitting in one position for hours is brutal on your spine, no matter how good your posture is. Set a timer on your phone. Every thirty minutes, stand up, walk around, roll your shoulders back, do some gentle neck stretches. Just reset your body.

And speaking of stretches, here’s one I teach all my patients. It’s called a chin tuck. Sitting up tall, gently pull your chin straight back, like you’re making a double chin. Hold it for five seconds. You should feel a stretch at the base of your skull. Do that ten times, a few times a day. It helps retrain those deep neck muscles that get weak from all that forward head posture.

Now, I also want you to think about strengthening. Rows, reverse flys, anything that works the muscles between your shoulder blades. Strong upper back muscles help hold your shoulders back and your head in the right position. You don’t need a fancy gym membership. Resistance bands work great.

Here’s the reality though. If you’ve been dealing with neck pain, headaches, or stiffness for weeks or months, it’s time to get evaluated. At Southern Wellness Chiropractic, we look at the whole picture. We assess your spine alignment, your muscle balance, your posture patterns. Then we create a plan that’s specific to you. Chiropractic adjustments, targeted exercises, ergonomic advice, whatever you need to get relief and get back to feeling like yourself.

You don’t have to just live with this discomfort. And you definitely don’t have to give up your phone or your job. You just need the right tools and the right guidance.

So here’s what I want you to do. Start making those small changes today. Raise your screens. Move more often. Do those chin tucks. And if you’re still struggling, give us a call. We’re right here in Magnolia, and we’d love to help you out.

Thanks for listening, and I’ll catch you next time. Take care of that neck.
