Hey there, and welcome back. I’m Dr. John Tysdal, and you’re listening to the Southern Wellness Chiropractic podcast, coming to you from right here in Magnolia, Texas. Today we’re talking about something I hear about almost every single day in my office – sciatica. That sharp, shooting pain that can travel all the way from your lower back, down through your hip, and into your leg. If you’ve ever felt it, you know exactly what I’m talking about. And if you haven’t, well, let’s hope it stays that way. But either way, understanding what sciatica actually is can make a huge difference.

So let’s start with the basics. What is sciatica, really? The sciatic nerve is the longest nerve in your entire body. It starts in your lower back, runs through your hips and buttocks, and travels all the way down each leg. When that nerve gets compressed or irritated, that’s when you get what we call sciatica. Now, sciatica isn’t a diagnosis on its own – it’s actually a symptom. It tells us that something is putting pressure on that nerve. And figuring out what that something is, well, that’s where we come in.

Here’s what’s interesting. A lot of people assume sciatica just means back pain. But the pain can show up in a lot of different ways. Some people feel a burning sensation. Others describe it as an electric shock going down the leg. Some experience numbness or tingling, and others feel weakness in the leg or foot. It really depends on where the nerve is being affected and how much pressure is involved. The tricky part is that sometimes the back doesn’t hurt much at all, but the leg feels terrible. So if you’re dealing with any of those sensations, it’s worth paying attention.

Now, here’s the thing. There are a few common reasons why the sciatic nerve gets irritated. One of the most frequent causes we see is what’s called a subluxation – that’s when the vertebrae in your lower back are misaligned and putting pressure on nearby nerves. Another common cause is a tight muscle in the hip area called the piriformis. When that muscle tightens up and spasms, it can actually press directly on the sciatic nerve. And then there are disc issues, where the cushioning between your vertebrae bulges or shifts and irritates the nerve root. All of these are things that chiropractic care is really well suited to address.

So what can you do right now? First, try not to sit for long periods without getting up and moving around a little. Prolonged sitting is one of the biggest aggravators of sciatic pain. Second, gentle stretching of the hip and lower back can provide some relief. A simple stretch where you lie on your back and pull one knee gently toward your chest can help take some pressure off. And third, pay attention to your posture. Slouching forward – especially if you work at a desk or drive a lot – can add extra stress to your lower back and make things worse.

Now, when should you come see us? Honestly, if you’ve been dealing with that shooting leg pain, numbness, or tingling for more than a few days, don’t wait it out. The sooner we can take a look, the better. At Southern Wellness Chiropractic, what we do is take the time to figure out exactly where the problem is coming from. We look at how you’re moving, how your spine is aligned, and what’s actually causing that nerve to be irritated. From there, we put together a care plan that’s specific to you, not just a one-size-fits-all approach.

Chiropractic adjustments can help restore proper alignment to the spine, take pressure off the irritated nerve, and give your body the best chance to heal naturally. And that’s really what we’re after, getting you back to feeling like yourself again.
